The science of meteors, meteorites, and impact craters — reading 4.6 billion years of solar system history from space rocks

1. Basics — Meteoroid, Meteor, Meteorite

☄️ Meteoroid

Rock in space, sand-grain to boulder size. Most are asteroid fragments.

In space

🌠 Meteor

Streak of light when meteoroid burns in atmosphere. Called "shooting star".

In atmosphere

🪨 Meteorite

Surviving fragment that hits Earth. Only ∼5% of meteors become meteorites.

On ground

Why study them?

AgeOldest rocks known — 4.56 billion years, older than Earth itselfOriginAsteroid belt, Moon, Mars; 300+ confirmed Martian meteoritesCluesReveal solar system formation, water & organic molecules deliveryThreatPlanetary defense: Chicxulub impact wiped dinosaurs 66 MYA

2. Three Major Types

Type% of fallsCompositionIdentification
Stony (Chondrites & Achondrites)94%Silicate rock, olivine + pyroxeneDark fusion crust, light interior, may have round chondrules
Iron5%Iron-nickel alloy (Fe-Ni)Very heavy, magnetic, Widmanstätten patterns when etched
Stony-Iron (Pallasites)1%Olivine crystals in metal matrixMost beautiful, green crystals in metal, extremely rare

Chondrites: The time capsules

Contain chondrules — mm-sized round droplets frozen from solar nebula. Carbonaceous chondrites (e.g. Murchison) contain amino acids; building blocks of life.

3. Meteoritics in India

Famous Indian meteorite falls

1866 — Khetrhi, Rajasthan: Iron meteorite, studied by British Geological Survey
1916 — Semarkona, MP: LL3.0 chondrite — one of most primitive meteorites ever found
1999 — Piplia Kalan: Eucrite achondrite from asteroid Vesta
2016 — Kamargaon, Assam: Witnessed fall, H-chondrite
2023 — Ranpur, Gujarat: Recent fall recovered by PRL Ahmedabad

India's nodal lab: Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad maintains meteorite repository and classifies new falls.

What to do if you find one?

1. Don't wash; note GPS. 2. Photo in place. 3. Handle with clean foil, not hands. 4. Report to PRL / Geological Survey of India. The Meteoritical Society requires witnessed fall data for naming.

4. Impact Craters of India

🌋 Lonar Crater, Maharashtra

Age: ∼35,000-50,000 yrs Dia: 1.8 km

Only hypervelocity impact crater in basalt rock on Earth. Saline soda lake. Formed by meteor ∼2 million tons.

Best preserved

💧 Ramgarh Crater, Rajasthan

Dia: 3.5 km Age: ∼165 MYA

Recognized 2020 as national geo-heritage. Near your Jaipur!

Near Jaipur

⛰️ Dhala Crater, MP

Dia: 11 km Age: ∼2.5 billion yrs

Largest in India, one of oldest in world. Formed in Bundelkhand granite.

Largest

Global major: Chicxulub (Mexico, 180km, dinosaur extinction), Barringer (Arizona, 1.2km).

5. Lab Identification Guide

Fusion crustThin black/brown burnt skin from atmospheric entryDensityHeavier than normal rock; iron types strongly magneticChondrulesRound grains visible in broken surface = chondriteNot meteorite ifHas holes like bread (slag), glassy bubbles, or light weight

Simple tests

• Magnet test • Streak test (meteorite leaves faint/no streak) • Nickel test kit (terrestrial rocks lack Ni)
